Volunteer

We need you!Become a SAFE neighborhood ambassador!

Neighborhood residents working with the S.A.F.E. Neighborhoods Program may fill a variety of roles. During the activation of a neighborhood evacuation hub, job aids found in the JIT kit will provide guidance for individuals volunteering to fill various roles.  Those with leadership interest will be highly encouraged to register and continue their training with the American Red Cross. Community members may also choose to join groups such as CERT, MRC, etc.  Doing so will not only provide additional training, but will also give them the opportunity to practice and gain experience.

“There are many Amateur Radio Club across the State, contact your Local Emergency Management to know which club is close to you.” In exercises such as the Great Utah ShakeOut, ham radio operators provide a vital communication link between the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the school locations of CERT and Shelter of the SAFE Neighborhoods Program. Participation in the radio rooms during exercises is by assignment.  Contact your local emergency management office to get information about the HAM radio club in your area. www. slcarc.org

A S.A.F.E. Hub Command Post will be set up in the school. CERT members are encouraged to participate with Field Operations to conduct search and rescue operations and to open a medical treatment area. Here is where we need your help. Our CERT teams need block captains to quickly find those that need help. As a block captain, you will be given the map for your block and instructions how to use it and report with it to the school. Contact your local Emergency Management to get training information in your area. www.citizencorps.gov

Before a disaster, download the Red Cross Shelter Finder App to find the nearest shelter to your location and the space available. After a real earthquake, you could sleep at your house and come to the shelter for meals. Your pets cannot come into the shelter. It is possible that an area could be set up for pets outside the shelter by Utah Emergency Animal Response Coalition.     For more info or if you want to volunteer to set up a pet area, go to their website www.uearc.org .

Sign up in the shelter for a First Aid or CPR class. Sign up to take a class to become a shelter manager, worker or volunteer. The skills  you will learn are priceless in an emergency. On the Red Cross website, you can download emergency checklists and information or sign up for specific training, like Life Guard or Skills for Babysitting.  You can find a blood drive near you by the date or distance from your house. You can donate funds to support urgent humanitarian needs around the world. Disaster  Program, American Red Cross, Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter, Office: 801-323-7002 www.redcross.org
